Lighthouses are owned by Maritime New Zealand, and hold historical interest, which means that the original appearance and structure must remain as it was initially intended.
Most lighthouses are cast steel modular construction, and with the location of the lighthouses with heavy marine environments, full encapsulation is required to keep the salt and environment out while the existing paint layers have ben removed, and also to contain the lead-based paints that were applied over many years.
The porosity of the cast steel panels also creates problems with pinholes, solvent entrapment, and harboring salts and other contaminates.
