The non destructive testing for coating projects includes;-

  • Surface profile
  • Surface cleanliness standard
  • Measure of soluble chlorides (Salt), and can measure for Sulphates and Nitrates
  • Pre-coating substrate inspection
  • Wet Film Thickness measurements
  • Dry Film Thickness measurements (Electronic DFT gauge, or Type 1 Banana gauge)
  • Test for cure
  • Holiday Testing (Low Voltage Wet Sponge Test)

Measuring Surface Profile

ICS measures surface profile with both digital surface profile gauge and the Testex Replica tape.

The Testex Replica Tape is the method preferred by ICS because the sample can be checked by any other party without dispute, and can be kept with the QA documentation for any future reference.

Soluble Chloride Testing

ICS uses TQC Bresle kits to measure the conductivity of the test solution.

Non-destructive DFT Testing

ICS use predominately DeFelsko Positest 6000 electronic DFT gauges for measuring the Dry Film Thickness of paint coatings, galvanizing, and other coatings.

ICS also have Elcometer electronic DFT gauges, and the Elcometer “banana” if there is any specific requirement for either to be used.

ICS also have the Defelsko Ultasonic DFT gauges for non-ferrous and higher DFT coatings.

ICS inspectors will use mirrors and other aids to inspect all surfaces, particularly the hard-to-access and coat surfaces that are hidden and out of site.

ICS inspectors will use magnification lenses where any specific condition or defect requires closer look.

ICS also have portable surface microscopes for any exceptional close inspection is required.

Most times a reasonably clear and descriptive photograph can be taken with the aid of the magnification.

Wet Sponge Holiday Testing

Although considered Destructive Testing in some instances, ICS opt for the low voltage Wet Sponge Holiday Tester for Holiday Testing to avoid any destructive damage to the coating after full cure has been reached.

ICS can also carry out High Voltage Spark Holiday Testing if the client or specification requires, but this method can be considered Destructive Testing.

Holiday Testing

ICS use both Wet Sponge Holiday Testers and High Voltage Holiday Testers as per the specification requirements.

ICS inspectors are capable to carry out non-destructive inspections on buildings and other structures from ladders, rope access, swinging stage, and elevated Work Platforms (EWP).
